What is the impact of adding a 1 byte field for a uid for permissions on who created or modified a block?

One of the things I can foresee is if two people are playing a vs match and want to destroy one another's blocks (thing Rampart) but not edit one another's blocks or territory an ownership flag may be in order.

Either as an overlay (separate table) or integrated into the map data as a per-block permission (thinking Linux like perms perhaps with user, group (allies and friends), and others.

By automatically allocating ownership when adding or removing a block (with some padding, say 3 block radius) this would allow people to tunnel underneath one another.

Question is, is integrating the perms into the blocks themselves optimal or keeping a separate table more ideal?

I think for that sort of thing, you would be looking at assigning ownership in areas rather than for individual blocks. Probably on a per chunk basis.

It would also allow more than 256 players to have ownership assigned within a given world.

I will probably be working on multi-player after my current slope binge and have thought of allowing optional 'claims' to be staked in a creative type scenario. These would be full world height (y) and a certain width and depth (x,z).

For competitive play i like the idea of clans / individuals each having their own world with a goal that they can fortify and protect (with turrets). Then interlopers beam into the world at a random location near the goal and have to capture it. In this scenario there wouldn't need to be ownership per se.

Also, the latter scenario means that a clans fortifications can be left sitting on a server and can be 'stormed' at any time by another clan. But just an idea so far.

The full world height is a bit of a problem as I see it. There is no way to get over or under a territory wall. With a limited height for block modification\placement you could at least get underneath them through a tunnel. Might be advantageous to build artillery on the far side of the fortress for example when they are expecting you from the other direction.
