Sloped Roof Empty Sloped Roof

Post by Slaihne Mon May 09, 2011 2:25 pm

While i was working on the code to get the models pointing in the right direction i thought i'd add in a proper sloped block to use as a roof tile type thing.

https://blokworld.forumotion.co.uk/gallery/General-Images/Slope-Test-pic_7.htm

It looks good, or will do when it's textured better, but it jars with the lighting a bit and to allow the player to walk smoothly over it (it's treated like a square block atm) will take a bit of effort.

What do you think?

I like it. Maybe you shall make some more types of it (like metal or something like that) And i think you shall make stairs Smile

That looks awesome. They will surely add much depth to the game. Do you plan on adding slopes to the land as well?

Adding slopes is a great addition! It adds a lot when making buildings while still keeping most of the overall blocky style of the game.

Will slopes be individual block types, or will you be able to toggle between placing a block or slope with any material?

The slopes look great!

I think they are individual block types... look closely at the image.

Yeah, it does appear that there are multiple textures on the slope objects, which implies that it would be an individual block type seeing it would be made out of several "materials".

The slopes in that image were actually what i refer to as 'model blocks'. Basically a model that can be used as a block. They're relatively inefficient to draw since they're just a bunch of triangles with a relatively high vertex count. The engine supports displaying them in 6 different orientations. The lights are done the the same way.

I'm currently working on giving direct support for slopes within the engine.

The little 'warning' blocks are placeholders for corner pieces and the lighting is off.

A small update, with all the upward facing slope blocks in place.

The down facing slopes (for overhangs and cave ceilings) are next. Then the lighting needs rejigged to cope with slopes.

Phew, this is time consuming and fiddly, but it's starting to come together now i think.

I've now got the water / caustics working properly (i knew it would be useful allowing liquid to co-exist with a solid block). Now to flip it upside down and get the downward slopes working too.

A little video i made today is at...
