What is a Tech-Test?
Basically, a Tech-Test will allow me to see how this thing runs on several different computers.
I started development on a Q6600 Intel CPU and currently am using an i7. These are two reasonably powerful machines and i am conscious that some changes will be needed to run on lower power PC's.
I have already pinpointed some areas that can be altered to provide a lower spec path to enable playable frame rates. Some of these are obvious (lower quality textures, shorter view distance, fewer particles) but some are maybe not so obvious (remove caustics underwater, remove detail / noise texture).
Basically, visual quality will drop to enable faster frame rates as is so often the case.
That's where you guys come in...
I initially want to get a few folk who want to have a muck around with the current engine and who don't mind allowing me to get some information from them about how it runs.
Anyone selected will get a download for the engine and will be able to copy it to a folder, install the SlimDX redistributable and then run the engine. At the end of each 'play' session it will connect to my server and deliver some statistics about the play session. Things like frame rates, amount of memory used at various points etc. Also it will let me know what RAM, CPU and GFX card is installed. There won't be any personal details in there and i will probably let you review the data before it is sent. Oh, and you will need a user name and password that i will supply.
From this i should be able to better judge what needs done to improve playability on various hardware.
In terms of what you guys need to run it, the following would be neccessary...
Window Vista or Windows 7
DirectX 10
At least 2gB of ram
I would advise against trying it out on a netbook btw.
If anyone wants to put their name in the hat for this process, please reply to this message and let me know what your CPU, RAM and GFX card are please.
I hope to have this started before the end of April.

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
Been following you on youtube, love the look of your game.
If you need more testers, count me in:
IntelCore i7
Win7 64 4 GB
ATI HD 5700 Series 1GB
also have few laptops I could test on.
Let me test it (I work as a professional tester for software company) , I'll report any bugs I find!

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
I like your engine very much, so I would like to participate in the Tech-Test, too.
My system is not that new than yours, but still working well. So you could test function on older systems.
My configuration:
CPU: Pentium D 820 (2x2.8 GHz)
Graphics: HD 2600 AGP
RAM: 2GB

croxxx

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
I've made a version available for download.
You first need to download and install the RUNTIME from...
http://slimdx.org/download_june10.php
Then download the engine from...
http://www.blokworld.co.uk/techtest.zip
And unzip it into a folder of your choice.
You can then run the engine by double clicking BLOKWORLD.EXE
I decided against the whole login thing atm and this version is pretty rough and ready, but have at it anyway.
More instructions on a seperate thread.

Edit: 50fps average. I made an awesome house =)I also got a DXGI_ERROR_UNAVAILABLE: The requested functionality is not supported by the device or driver. (-2005270494)
It seems to occur when I minimize the game or it did the last two times anyway =)How big is the world by the way? It seems to just keep going... ;p

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
Not sure about the error you're getting.
I realised i hadn't tried minimizing the screen myself so went and tried it out. No error i'm afraid. Anyone else out there get this error?
Your FPS seems a bit low, are you running it a crazy resolution? I can run it here in debug mode (which normally slows things down a bit) with the game stretched over 2 1080p monitors and it still runs at 60 FPS. (I've got a 6950 too).
Good to hear you're able to build stuff I'll have to create a forum for screenshots of things that folk have built.
The world basically keeps going; it's generated procedurally on the fly. Or, it's the dream of a pseudo random number generator, as i like to put it

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
The game has ran fine for me at 60 fps.
I am using:
Intel i7 920 Quad Core @ 2.67 GHz per core
NVidia Geforce GTS 250
6.00 GB of DDR3 RAM
The only slowdown that has occurred was at 30 fps when in wire-frame mode (which isn't really part of the actual game for normal users).

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
Hmm, I really hate my PC my graphics card is overclocked to 975/1350. So I would expect it to do well, in most games. All this system has done is made me wonder why I spent over a grand on it when im 17. lol, its annoying. But the game is awesome!Slaihne wrote:Not sure about the error you're getting.

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
You may be running it with AntiAliasing or something similar forced in the video driver. This could possibly slow things down.

Re: What is a Tech-Test?
It thought that too, I didn't check though lol. Its playable though so not an issue. Plus my CPU is rubbish stupid phenom II. Im getting an Intel PC next. Probably going to spend a ridiculous amount on it so then it won't be terrible.. I still get that error occasionally..Slaihne wrote:You may be running it with AntiAliasing or something similar forced in the video driver. This could possibly slow things down.
